UTC Track Third At Gamecock Quad Invitational

Saturday, March 10, 2018
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s track and field team opened the Outdoor season Saturday with a third place finish at the Gamecock Quad Invitational hosted by Jacksonville State at the Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala.

Seven personal records (PR) were set at the meet including Emily Poole who took first in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:28.80. Rebekah Wich finished second in the event and topped her previous best time at 18:29.96.

“This was to be a developmental meet as we trained through it,” Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said.
“To have everyone place, PR or be just off a PR this early is great.”

In the 1500 meter, all five runners scored for the Mocs with the top three setting PRs. Brianna Nelson placed second in the middle distance race with a time of 4:47.49. Haley Morris was third with a time of 4:48.33 and Hannah Caldwell’s time of 4:53.02, finishing fourth overall.

Abby Bateman took second in the 800 meter run with a PR time of 2:18.26. Nicole Buehrle, also hitting a personal best, finished third with a time of 2:19.44.

“Abby ran the best tactical race of her career,” Meyer said. “Nicole coming off a foot injury was a surprise at third.”

In the field events, Rebekah Hampton took third in the Long Jump (4.87m) and the Triple Jump (10.60m). Hampton was fifth in the 100 meter Hurdles with a time of 16.32.

Rebekah Bryant scored for UTC with a sixth place finish in the Long Jump with a distance of 4.84m. Taylor Grayson was third in the Shot Put, throwing it 10.80m and was threw a 39.72 meters in the Hammer Throw for seventh overall.

“Taylor improved with each hammer throw,” Meyer said. “Rebekah Hampton did great in her first outdoor meet with two third place finishes in the jumps and a fifth in the hurdles.“

Freshman Katie Coker was fifth in the 400 meter Dash with a time of 1:01.07 and the Mocs relay teams placed fourth and fifth to wrap up the event.

“Our A 4x400 did well as everyone had run prior races,” Meyer said. “Coach Michael Gadson continues to develop the field girls and Coach Amanda Cotter has our mid distance runners competing at a high level already. We are only going to get stronger as the season progresses.”

Host Jacksonville State took first in the Red Division with 241 points. Georgia State was second followed by the Mocs in third with 100 points.

Chattanooga will return to the track on March 24 at the Emory Classic in Atlanta, Ga.

Randy Smith: SEC Picks Week Four

There have been few surprises in the SEC through the first three weeks of the season. One of them however is Alabama. Why you might ask? Well, the Crimson Tide seems to be even better than we all thought. In fact, I don't know if any team in the country can beat them this year. For instance, this week against a top-25 Texas A&M team, 'Bama is a 28 point favorite.  Texas ... (click for more)

10-Term Congresswoman Marilyn Lloyd Dies

Marilyn Lloyd, who represented the Third District in Congress for 10 terms, has died at the age of 89. Ms. Lloyd got into politics after her husband, TV anchor Mort Lloyd, was killed in a plane crash in 1974. Mort Lloyd had won the Democratic primary to oppose Rep. Lamar Baker. The party chose her to go on the ballot in his place, and she defeated Congressman Baker. She was ... (click for more)

Soddy Daisy Couple Robbed Of Over $56,000 In Items; Believe Facebook Post May Have Tipped Off Thieves

A Soddy Daisy couple reported a theft at their residence netted thieves over $56,000 in items. The couple said the thieves may have picked their residence because they posted on Facebook that they were vacationing in Gatlinburg. Michael Lee Leming, 42, has been arrested in the case. However, only $10,600 of the stolen items were recovered. Leming is from Dunlap, but was ... (click for more)

Arming Teachers With Guns Will Be Too Dangerous - And Response (4)

Arming teachers with guns in the classroom, as Bill Lee proposes, would be the single most dangerous thing to happen to students in Tennessee history. Students and teachers in close proximity to loaded firearms daily? Across this state, in middle schools alone, there are probably hundreds of student/teacher conflicts a day. What if a student got hold of gun in a struggle with ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Scream ‘Sexual Assault!’

Candace Owens, a communications director for the conservative non-profit “Turning Point,” wasted not a minute’s time as the Democratic debauchery of Supreme Court appointee Brett Kavanaugh raced like a prairie fire across America. There is little doubt that many politicians -- on either side of the aisle -- play a little loose with the truth. But this Eleventh Hour attack on the ... (click for more)
